Treat yourself to a day of pickerel fishing on Johnston Lake. The lake is known for it’s pickerel (walleye) population and as with most northern lakes you will find a few northern pike in there too. The campsite we use is set up for four guests with two boats & motors so you may bring up to 3 of your favourite friends/family to share a special day of self-guided fly-in fishing.    The site is located approximately 61 km (38 sm) North of Yellowknife (63° 00.43’N/114° 10.57’W).   Johnston Lake is about 6 km (3.7 sm) long, 1.5 km (1 sm) wide and is a relatively shallow lake.

Our goal is to make you fishing experience with Ahmic Air unique, carefree, and enjoyable. We have done our best to supply each excursion with top-end, well maintained equipment. Our equipment is user friendly and has been matched to each location that we use.  Although you may choose to bring a selection of your own fishing gear, each trip has been equipped and setup in such a way that you only have need to bring personal items, snacks, and appropriate clothing for the day.  We can provide rods and tackle for those that don't have their own equipment available.

WHAT WE PROVIDE:
-all flights (drop off & pick up)
-one boat and motor for every two guests
-spinning reels & rods for each guest,
-appropriate barb-less tackle,
-personal floatation device for each guest,
-required safety equipment including first-aid kit,
-fishing net for each boat, and
-all boat fuel

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING:
-fishing license
-sun tan lotion, insect repellent, personal medications
-warm clothing (dress in layers) - jacket, gloves, hat
-rain gear
-waterproof foot wear
-camera
-beverages, lunch & snacks

All flights will be onboard one of our classic DHC-2 Beaver Floatplanes.  The DHC-2 Beaver has been a favourite amongst bush pilots, passengers and operators for almost 70 years.  The Beaver was designed for flight in rugged and remote areas.  It's short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities make it ideal for areas normally only accessible by canoe or by foot. Designed and built in Canada to operate on floats, skis, and wheels.  The Beaver was named one of the top ten Canadian engineering achievements of the 20th century.  It has become iconic to plane spotters and has been commemorated on currency & postage, and received recognition in artwork, photography and in film.

Ahmic Air's “Beavers” feature upgrades such as comfortable interiors, enlarged windows for easy viewing and aviation headsets for all guests to provide easy flowing conversation between passengers and the pilot.  Our pilots have a tight bond with the aircraft they fly and will be more than happy to enhance your onboard experience by answering any questions you or your guests may have throughout your flights.

We encourage our guests to be at the Ahmic Air dock for 7:30am to get organized for the day and to facilitate an 8:00am departure.  Make sure you have your fishing licenses the night before!  The flight to Johnston Lake from Yellowknife will be approximately 25 minutes in length.  Prior to landing your pilot will give you a good review of the lake so that you have the opportunity to scout out the lake for shoals and underwater structure from the air.

Once you have reached the campsite your pilot will help you get setup for the day and ensure that you are comfortable with the operation of the boats and motors.  This trip is a self-guided trip so once your pilot leaves the site you will be on your own for the day.  Licensed guiding services through Yellow Dog Lodge are available at additional charge and you may read more on their services at check-out.

On landing your pilot will provide you with a walk through on the equipment.  Once you are comfortable with the operation of the boats and motors your pilot will depart the lake leaving you and your guests to enjoy the day.

Pick-Up times are variable depending on how many hours of fishing you would like and how heavily booked the aircraft are for the day of your trip.  Aircraft bookings are based on a first come first served basis so the earlier you make your reservations the better the opportunity you will have to get your first selection of pickup time.

Most guests choose to have the aircraft to be dispatched from Yellowknife at about 4:00pm.  This provides the ability to return to Yellowknife and get cleaned up from the day of fishing in time to meet supper reservations at one of our local restaurants.  Dependent on aircraft availability you may choose to dispatch an aircraft from Yellowknife any time between 12:00pm and 8:00pm to pick you up.  Please keep in mind that from the time of dispatch in Yellowknife it will take approximately 25 minutes to reach your campsite on the lake.
