A fly in fishing trip is a special northern experience; starting with the adventure of flying in a bush plane equipped with “floats” to take you far away from the city lights and, traffic noise of civilization into the remote wilderness where you will have the opportunity and chance to catch huge fish, in clear and deep waters that will provide you with fights and “tales” worthy of the 60th parallel.

We can provide you with multiple day overnight packages ranging from 2-day through to 5 days of fishing with 5 nights stay.  With our summer sunlight full days are just that!

Overnight guests do need to bring their own bedroll (sleeping bag, pillow, etc.) we have first class prospector tents that provide an authentic camping experience sleeping up off the ground in bunks within a shelter that is warm, dry, and airy; meals are served in the ‘lodge’ cabin where the coffee pot will always be waiting for you along with windows that look out over the lake.

All guests are treated to the fact that there is a camp cook on staff and all meals are included and prepared for guests while they are at Here lodge.

Our multi day packages begin similar to our single day by arriving at Ahmic Air’s floatbase for 8:00am to check-in and climb aboard one of Ahmic Air’s DHC-2 Beaver floatplanes.  The Beaver floatplane provides passengers and onlookers a sense of nostalgia for a point in time when Northern Canada was first being opened up and discovered by aircraft. The Beaver has become iconic to plane spotters and has been commemorated on currency and postage, and received recognition in artwork, photography and in film. It's rugged dependability and exceptional performance have made it a favourite with bush pilots, passengers and operators for over 77 years.

One of our pilots will fly you east of Yellowknife (on heading 102°) 74 miles (119 km) to the where you will land at Hero Lodge.  The flight will take approximately 45 minutes and you will see first hand the number of lakes that we have within the region waiting and ready for exploration.

We will land at Hero Lodge which is situated on Narrow Island in Great Slave Lake’s Hearne Channel which is part of the lake’s legendary “East Arm”.  Great Slave Lake is the tenth largest freshwater lake in the world and the deepest in North America.

Hero Lodge and Great Slave Lake Safaris are proudly owned and operated by veterans of the Canadian Armed forces who pride themselves in providing a one-of-a-kind experience.  These trusted guides will provide you with the tutelage you need to fish from zodiac boats, and to thoroughly enjoy your surroundings in a safe and fun manner.

After a camp orientation and safety briefing you will take to the water and with any luck secure your lunch.

Nothing adds to a fishing trip more than the experience of a shore lunch of fresh caught and shoreline prepared and cooked fish served with the regular camp fixings from the fire.  After lunch you will get to fully enjoy the mid day sun as it fully presents the crystal clear waters of Great Slave Lake letting you look down into the deeps and watch the fish you are trying to reel up to the surface searching for that one trophy trout that will beat your host’s record of a 42 pound trout caught and released in the waters surrounding the lodge.

After a full day on the water you will return to the lodge for supper and ten it is up to you whether or not you wish to go back out and continue to fish in the evening sun or try to conserve some energy for tomorrow.

For 2 day, 3 day , and 4 day packages you will start to hear the distinct rumble of one of Ahmic Air’s rotary engine powered beavers break the silence at around 5pm as it returns on the horizon and lands at Hero Lodge to pick you and your party up and return you to Yellowknife.  Depending on timing and weather there may be the ability to do a bit of a shore-crawl before cutting the corner for home.

You should arrive back in Yellowknife by 6:00pm; in time to get home and fire up the grill, or treat yourself to a supper at one of the many fine eateries in Yellowknife and share the stories of the day.

For guests that choose the five day option there will be five full nights in camp and pickup from camp will occur on the sixth day at approximately 9:30 having you back to Yellowknife by 10:30am.  Lodging will include the additional supper of the evening of the 5th day, and breakfast on the 6th day before your departure.
